*CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES*
1. Waste Management
2. Gross Agricultural post harvest losses
3. Excessive use of fossil fuels in rural communities
4. Environmental degradation
5. Environmental Pollution from industries and companies
*ACTION PLAN!!!*
To curb the identified environmental challenges, My action as Commissioner for Environment will be the following;
1. Setting up an Environmental Audit Committee that will be saddled with the responsibility of identifying and reporting industries that constitute a huge threat to the environment and assessment will be done based on GHG emission rates and degree of pollution constituted by individual companies.
2. Implement a Public Private Partnership and innovate methods of creating wealth from waste through recycling and reuse processes. This will be done by inviting investors to invest in waste management initiatives within the state and as a means of ensuring effectiveness and compliance, State agency in charge of waste management will be in check to monitor and report progress levels.
3. Set up a technical committee for clean energy innovation aimed at inventing, recommending and replicating world class indigenous and healthy cooking fuels for rural communities across the state as a means of providing alternatives to the currently existing method of cooking with the use of firewood and charcoal at the expense of the ecosystems floras.
4. Review, Enact and Implement Environmental laws sanctioning environmental polluters and enforce strict compliance to environmental standards by relevant state law enforcement agencies.
5. Set up a central environmental emergency response system (CEERS). This is aimed at strengthen stakeholder engagement and enhancing project feedback mechanism system across various rural communities in the state. Responses from feedbacks will give the commission a chunk of data to drive its priorities areas and map out intervention zones that have been affected by erosion, flooding or severe environmental disasters.
6. Boost the use of renewable energy especially in Urban house holds and reducing the emission of GHGs. This can be achieved through the creation of an Energy Investment Funds (EIF) in partnership with the States ministry of finance. Households of beneficiaries especially the civil servants will be installed with solar panels at affordable rates to be deducted from their monthly wages over a short period of time. This will significantly reduce the overdependence on environmentally unfriendly sources of power common in the state.
With the implementation of the above strategies…
*Nasarawa state wil be greater!!!*
