Ndume Urges Military Deployment to Protect Insecure Kirawa Community
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has called on the military to deploy troops to Kirawa, Borno State, after Boko Haram ambushed motorists on the Kirawa–Pulka road, killing a CJTF member and burning six vehicles.
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (Borno South), former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, has appealed to military authorities to urgently deploy troops — even if just a platoon — to safeguard Kirawa and other surrounding communities bordering Gwoza Local Government Area and Cameroon.
The call came after a Boko Haram ambush along the Kirawa–Pulka road on Friday around 3 p.m., which left one Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) member dead and several others, including motorists and passengers, injured. Witnesses said some victims fled into the bush, while six vehicles loaded with food items and luggage were set ablaze by the insurgents.
Speaking on Saturday, Ndume lamented that since the deadly attack on a Cameroonian military base in Kirawa last month, which led to the troops’ withdrawal, there has been no military presence in the town. He noted that the few local hunters, vigilantes, and CJTF members left behind are overstretched and unable to effectively protect the community.
“It is very disheartening that I received a distress call that some armed Boko Haram terrorists laid ambush on motorists and passengers along Kirawa–Pulka road yesterday. The victims were escorted by few members of Civilian Joint Task Force as there are no military escorts due to dislodgement of Cameroonian troops based in Kirawa last month,” Ndume said.
“Unfortunately, one of our brave Civilian Joint Task Force was killed during exchange of gunfire in the ambush. Many victims are nowhere to be found as I speak. At least six vehicles including two Golf Volkswagen saloon cars, a bus, and three trucks were set ablaze during the attack.”
Ndume extended condolences to the family of the slain CJTF member, praying for his soul to rest in peace and for the quick recovery of those injured.
The senator reiterated his call for urgent security intervention:
“Let me also appeal to the military authorities to deploy troops, even if it is a platoon, to safeguard Kirawa and its people, because my people are now living in perpetual fear since dislodgement of Cameroonian troops based in Kirawa last month.”
