Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has apologised to Qatar following a deadly strike that targeted Hamas leaders in Doha, which also claimed the life of a Qatari security guard.

According to a diplomat who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, Netanyahu, in a Monday telephone call made from the White House, expressed regret for the September 9 attack, which violated Qatari sovereignty.

The strike, which hit a residential area of Doha, was aimed at Hamas officials scheduled to review a U.S.-brokered ceasefire proposal in Gaza.

Although Netanyahu had previously defended the operation, pressure mounted after U.S. President Donald Trump — known for his close ties with Qatar — expressed dissatisfaction with the strike. Trump has since renewed efforts to secure a truce in Gaza.
