Nicaragua detains dozens over alleged support for Maduro’s arrest
Nicaraguan authorities have reportedly detained at least 60 people for celebrating or backing the US-led arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, rights groups say.
Authorities in Nicaragua have reportedly detained at least 60 people for celebrating or expressing support for the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, according to a human rights watchdog and local media reports on Friday.
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo are close allies of Maduro, who was arrested last Saturday in Caracas by US military personnel and flown to New York to face trial on drug trafficking and weapons-related charges.
Following the arrest of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, the NGO Blue and White Monitoring said “at least 60 arbitrary arrests” have been recorded in connection with alleged support for the operation.
In a post on X, the group said 49 people were still being held as of Friday “without information about their legal status,” while nine individuals had been released and three others briefly detained.
“This new wave of repression is carried out without a judicial order and is based solely on expressions of opinion: comments on social media, private celebrations, or not repeating official propaganda,” the organisation said.
Confidencial, a Nicaraguan newspaper operating from exile, reported that the arrests were carried out under a “state of alert” ordered by Murillo after Maduro’s capture, involving heightened surveillance of neighborhoods and social media activity.
Another local outlet, La Prensa, said those detained were targeted over “posts in favor” of the US-led operation.
