NIDCOM to Nigerians Abroad: Respect Host Laws as Three Freed in Saudi Arabia
NIDCOM’s Abike Dabiri-Erewa commends Saudi authorities and Nigerian agencies after three citizens were freed from detention. She urges Nigerians abroad to respect host laws and check luggage carefully.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has urged Nigerians living or traveling abroad to respect the laws of their host countries, even as it celebrated the release of three citizens who were recently detained in Saudi Arabia.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Gabriel Odu of the Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, NIDCOM Chairman/CEO Abike Dabiri-Erewa expressed relief over the discharge of Mrs. Maryam Hussain Abdullahi, Mr. Abdullahi Bahijja Aminu, and Mr. Abdulhamid Saddieq, who were held for four weeks before being declared innocent.
She commended the joint efforts of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Nigerian Consulate in Jeddah, describing the outcome as “a clear demonstration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to protect Nigerians abroad from unjust treatment.”
Dabiri-Erewa recalled similar cases of Zainab Aliyu and Ibrahim Ibrahim, both previously freed in Saudi Arabia after wrongful drug accusations. She emphasized that while the Nigerian government remains committed to defending its citizens, individuals must also take responsibility by respecting local laws and exercising caution when traveling.
She particularly advised Nigerians to heed NDLEA’s guidance by carefully checking luggage tags before boarding flights. She also thanked Saudi authorities for their cooperation in reviewing and resolving the case.
