Nnamdi Kanu Urges Nigerian Judges and Lawyers to Scrutinize His Conviction
IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu calls on Nigerian magistrates, judges, and lawyers to scrutinize his conviction, citing procedural flaws, reliance on repealed laws, and denial of a fair hearing.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has called on Nigerian magistrates, judges, and lawyers to thoroughly examine his conviction, describing it as legally unfounded.
The appeal came during a visit from his younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and human rights lawyer Dr. Maxwell Opara at Sokoto Medium Security Prison. Prince Emmanuel and Dr. Opara reported that Kanu maintained his conviction was unlawful, noting that no one can be convicted under a repealed law. He also said his final written address, which stressed his right to a fair hearing, was denied.
Kanu argued that the evidence cited by the court was neither included in the charge sheet nor formally presented against him. He highlighted the court’s reliance on previously struck-out charges from Justice Binta Nyako as a key procedural error.
He called on members of the Nigerian judiciary to uphold the Constitution and ensure impartiality and fairness. Kanu questioned the inconsistencies between his case and prior favorable rulings by the Umuahia High Court, the Court of Appeal, the UN, and the Supreme Court, which had acknowledged that the laws under which he was charged had been repealed.
“I remain committed to rejecting injustice, unfairness, and evil against anyone, regardless of tribe, faith, or ethnicity,” Kanu stated. He thanked those who recognized the irregularities in his trial and expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he received.
Kanu’s remarks highlight ongoing concerns about procedural fairness in high-profile cases in Nigeria and call for careful legal scrutiny to ensure justice is upheld.
