OAU Pro-Chancellor Prof. Abdulgafar Oyeweso Dies at 64

Prof. Abdulgafar Oyeweso, Chairman of Council and Pro-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has passed away at 64. He died Tuesday morning following surgery and will be buried today in Ede.

Prof. Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, Chairman of the Council and Pro-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has passed away at the age of 64.

The history professor died Tuesday morning at a hospital following what was reported as a successful surgery.

In a statement released by Olawale Oyeweso on behalf of the family, it was confirmed:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and brother, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso who departed this life on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025 at the age of 64 after a brief illness.

Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, a renowned Professor of history, educator and mentor, touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and political associates among others.

The late professor is survived by his wife, children, and other family members. His remains are scheduled for burial in his hometown of Ede at 4 p.m. today following Solat Ashri.
