Ogudu-Ifako Bridge Rehab Suspended as Gridlock Fuels Traffic Robberies in Lagos
The project, which entered its second phase on August 19 and was scheduled to run until October 1, 2025, involves the repair of expansion joints on the bridge. However, severe traffic congestion resulting from the maintenance work has created an opportunity for criminals to target stranded motorists.

The Lagos State Government has ordered a temporary suspension of the ongoing rehabilitation work on the Ogudu–Ifako Bridge in Kosofe Local Government Area, following escalating gridlock and a rise in traffic-related criminal activity along the route leading to the Third Mainland Bridge.
Suspension Triggered by Gridlock and Security Concerns
The project, which entered its second phase on August 19 and was scheduled to run until October 1, 2025, involves the repair of expansion joints on the bridge. However, severe traffic congestion resulting from the maintenance work has created an opportunity for criminals to target stranded motorists.
Multiple reports indicate that the gridlock has stretched commute times from 15 minutes to over six hours in some cases, with many motorists falling victim to traffic robbers.
Robbery Victims Speak Out
Among the recent victims is media executive and lawyer, Mr. Richard Akinnola, who was attacked near the 7Up, Old Toll Gate area in Ketu while stuck in traffic.
Sharing his experience on X (formerly Twitter), Akinnola wrote:
“Calling on RRS, Lagos. Two days ago, the repair work on Ogudu road from 7Up commenced. This has led to serious traffic along that corridor. I was in the traffic about noon when I was robbed by hoodlums who took advantage of the severe traffic. They were in the process of breaking my car windows when armed idiots dispossessed me of every cash on me.”
He criticised the lack of visible security presence, saying:
“The RRS ought to be proactive and anticipated the operations of these idiots within that corridor by deploying their men along the area. They need to do this before someone is hurt or shot.”
RRS Responds
A source within the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), who spoke anonymously, confirmed that immediate steps have been taken to secure the area.
“The RRS Commander has drafted armed men to strategic places on patrol for the protection of the motoring public along Ogudu-Ifako where rehabilitation of the bridge is on-going,” the source said.
State Government’s Position
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, had earlier informed the public about the planned maintenance and warned of potential delays due to traffic diversions. He reiterated that the rehabilitation would be carried out in phases to minimize disruptions.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, confirmed that the suspension of work was to reassess traffic management strategies.
“The project was paused to review the traffic management plans. Work to continue during the week,” Musa said. “It’s a decision we have to take with the contractor and other stakeholders. We, however, enjoin residents to be patient, obey traffic officials, and make use of alternative routes. The exercise is for the good of the people, and we are making all efforts to fast-track the completion date.”
He added that ambulances have been stationed along the route to respond to any medical emergencies.
As Lagos commuters await the resumption of work under improved traffic and security arrangements, many continue to navigate the area with caution.
