Ogun Police Disown Viral Security Alert, Caution Public Against Spreading False Information
The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed a viral security advisory featuring CP Lanre Ogunlowo as fake, warning residents against spreading unverified content and assuring strengthened surveillance across concerned communities.
The Ogun State Police Command has refuted a viral security advisory circulating on social media, which features the photograph of the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo. The Command described the message as misleading, unauthorized, and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, said the police had observed a surge in unsolicited security “tips” being shared online, many of which falsely portray Ogun State as being on the verge of a security breakdown.
Odutola clarified that the viral advisory displaying the CP’s image did not originate from the Nigeria Police Force and was never approved or endorsed by the Command.
The statement further noted that some individuals and groups have been recycling outdated videos and uploading sensational content using divisive language to instill fear in the public.
The Command warned those responsible to stop circulating alarming videos, voice notes, and unverified claims, stressing that many of the messages being shared are entirely false.
Reassuring residents, the police said communities that have raised legitimate security concerns are under close surveillance. Additional personnel and operational resources have also been deployed to fortify security in identified locations.
The Ogun Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged the public to rely solely on official police communication channels for accurate and credible security information.
