The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has shed light on why the late Biafra war leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, publicly endorsed Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, founder of MASSOB, as his preferred successor in the Biafra movement.

In a statement issued by its National Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha, MASSOB recalled that Ojukwu openly recognized Uwazuruike’s dedication during the burial of his mother, Ezinne Monica Uwazuruike, on January 19, 2008.

According to the group, Ojukwu praised Uwazuruike for his steadfastness, courage, and commitment to the Biafra cause they both championed, urging him to continue with “confidence and unity of purpose.”

Mocha further noted that Ojukwu had reaffirmed his support for Uwazuruike earlier in October 2007, shortly after Uwazuruike’s partial release from Kuje Prison, when the late leader hosted him at his Enugu residence.

“Ojukwu expressed satisfaction with Uwazuruike’s resilience and encouraged him to remain steadfast in pursuing the Biafra agenda,” MASSOB stated.

The 2008 ceremony, where Ojukwu made the endorsement, was attended by several prominent Nigerians, including Senator Uche Chukwumerije, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Chief Chekwas Okorie, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Sir Victor Umeh, and various traditional rulers and MASSOB members.

MASSOB maintained that Ojukwu’s relationship with Uwazuruike went beyond mentorship, symbolizing continuity in leadership and shared vision for the realization of the Biafran cause.

“His message to Uwazuruike was clear — unity, consistency, and unwavering commitment must guide the struggle,” Mocha added.
