Nigeria flag and restructuring

The historic independence attained by Nigeria in 1960 quickly soured with the eruption of the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-70. Things have never remained the same since then.

When brutal military dictatorship after brutal military dictatorship was finally put to bed by a return to democracy in 1999, hope soared that finally the Giant of Africa can out a difficult past and a difficult period behind it.

Things have not exactly panned out as planned as the challenges of governing a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country have proven too numerous to mention. However, for many Nigerians, it is undeniable that the last seven years under the All Progressives Congress have been especially limp in Nigerias quest for nationhood.

Insecurity has continued to snap at the heels of the most vulnerable Nigerians just as hunger and poverty have continued to gnaw at the intestines of the poorest children and their families. While all these have gone on, Nigerians have been given cause many times to stop and wonder whether there is still a government in place at all.

One of the greatest beauties of democracy is to be glimpsed from the surfeit of options it gives people in terms of governance and political participation. One of those options is elections that are by every standard of democracy required to be free and fair.

As the 2023 general elections near, Nigerians would have an option to put the grievances they have been nursing about the current administration for the past seven years to good use.

It is under the nose of the current administration that things have lurched from bad to worse. Insecurity has soared even as the standard of living of the average everyday Nigerian which was nothing to write home about has plummeted to an all time low.

However, what is perhaps most telling about the current administration is the mostly deaf ears it has paid to the cries and groans of Nigerians. Many times, there has been a kind of nonchalant impunity with which the complaints of Nigerians are handled, a kind of arrogance which manifests in the actions and utterances of those in power.

Every democracy that is not a parody puts the people firmly in the thick of things. Nigerias democracy is not yet there, but the overwhelming evidence is that it is on an upward trajectory. This has been overwhelmingly attested to by the fact that elections in Nigeria have continued to improve for many years as Nigerians have continued to grow in awareness of what should go in and what should not go in.

The 2023 elections present Nigerians another opportunity to set things right. At the moment, many organizations are putting themselves out as crusaders for a new Nigeria. But it is obvious that none of these organizations can hold a candle up to the PDP New Generation which is a youth-led, youth-oriented and women-oriented organization which is committed to changing the narrative and adopting new ways of doing things by discarding the relics of old days.

The organization, a group of committed youths who are well holding their own in their various professions have been unwavering in calling on Nigerians to get their Permanent Voter Cards and take a stand during the next elections which are coming up next year.

As the PDP New Generation firmly believes, women and youths need to participate actively in the political process for Nigeria to stand any chance of being rescued. The ball is now in the court of Nigerian youths and women to join the PDP New Generation and take all necessary measures to rescue Nigeria.
