The Orluzurumee Youth Assembly, the apex youth body in Orlu Senatorial Zone of Imo State, has vowed to confront and end the insecurity that has troubled the region for the past five years.

Communities in Orsu (within Orlu Zone), as well as Okigwe and Onuimo in Okigwe Zone, have been among the worst affected by the persistent crisis.

The pledge was made on Monday during the election of the Assembly’s new executive officers.

Prince Izunna Obiefula, elected as the new president, declared that restoring peace and stability is the top priority of his administration. He emphasized that his leadership will focus on constructive dialogue with young people and cooperation with security agencies.

“Insecurity has been a major problem in the last five years in Orlu Zone, and we are going to positively engage our youths through dialogue, as well as with the various security agencies,” Obiefula said. “We want to make our youths realise that crime does not pay.”

He further stated that the Assembly will hold political leaders accountable for their campaign promises, particularly those relating to youth empowerment through skills acquisition and vocational training. According to him, such initiatives would discourage crime and promote productivity.

Obiefula lamented the economic toll insecurity has taken on the zone, noting that many businesses have relocated to Owerri while investors from the diaspora avoid the area due to safety concerns.

“Without peace, businesses cannot thrive,” he stressed. “We have vowed to address this issue as youths, because those most involved are youths from the zone. It is our responsibility to change this narrative.”
