Cycling Federation of Nigeria Backs Inaugural Championship

More than 100 cyclists from across Nigeria are expected to compete in the maiden edition of the Ajilete Grand Fondo cycling championship, scheduled to take place this December in Ogbomoso.

The Cycling Federation of Nigeria has thrown its full support behind the event, with board member Femi Thomas confirming the federation’s role in providing technical assistance to ensure the smooth running of the competition.

Thomas: “We Have No Choice But to Support the Initiative”

Thomas praised the tournament’s sponsor, Adebayo Majolagbe, for taking the initiative to organize the long-anticipated race, acknowledging the challenges the sport has faced in securing private sponsorship.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to have this type of event because we believe the cycling federation has been trying in its own capacity to encourage the sport,” Thomas said.

“Seeing this type of event coming up, we have no choice but to surround and support the initiative.”

He added that the event offers a unique platform to grow the sport, empower cycling clubs, and leave a positive economic and social impact on the host community.

“It’s going to make a very good lineup of opportunities for cyclists, promoting the sport, and giving a role for cycling enthusiasts, clubs, and professionals to come together.

Using our sport to promote such an environment is a plus for us. These initiatives will go a long way in projecting the community while also promoting cycling in Nigeria.”

He emphasized the importance of visibility and media attention:

“I feel like once you get the proper coverage, it will really help the cycling community in Nigeria.”
