Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has approved the extension of teachers’ retirement age from 60 to 65 years, while service years have been increased from 35 to 40.

The governor announced the decision on Sunday during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration at Ekiti Parapo Pavilion, Ado-Ekiti. He also rewarded outstanding teachers with cash prizes totaling N46 million, and approved the upward review of Science Teachers’ and Head of Department allowances, alongside the immediate payment of 2019 leave bonus arrears.

Oyebanji described teachers as “the foundation upon which the future of the state is built,” stressing that the reforms are aimed at motivating educators, retaining experienced hands, and repositioning the education sector.

“A committee will be set up to oversee the elongation of service year and ensure that only agile individuals enjoy the privilege,” he explained. The governor also pledged to prioritize teachers’ welfare and announced his intention to seek re-election, calling for their continued support.

Commissioner for Education, Dr. Olabimpe Aderiye, praised Oyebanji’s commitment, citing over N1.6 billion released as school grants, N6.2 billion paid as UBEC counterpart funding, and over N1.5 billion spent on WAEC fees in recent years.

In goodwill messages, ASUSS President Sola Adigun, NUT representatives Lateef Adesiyan and Adedeji Egbeyemi lauded the governor for sustaining free education, renovating schools, approving career progression for teachers, and employing thousands of new staff across primary and secondary schools.
