Patrick Dorgu Explains Meaning of Igbo Name ‘Chinazaekpere’, Reflects on Faith and Career
Manchester United’s Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu reveals the meaning of his Igbo name, “God answers prayers,” while reflecting on faith, family, and his football journey at Old Trafford.
Manchester United defender Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu has shared the significance of his Igbo middle name while speaking about the role of faith in his life and football journey.
The 20-year-old, born in Copenhagen to Nigerian parents, joined United in January 2025. In an interview with the club’s official website, he explained: “Chinazaekpere means ‘God answers prayers’. That’s what my parents gave to me when I was born.”
Dorgu emphasised that religion has always been central to his upbringing: “Religion means a lot to me, it’s always been a big part of my life and my family’s. I’ve always been praying since I was young and I keep praying.”
Reflecting on his routines, the Denmark international said he tries to stay rooted in family and community. “I come to pray at this church on Sunday if I have the time and we don’t have a game; I try to be here as much as I can.”
On connecting his faith with football, Dorgu added: “United is a massive club, I knew it would be a great opportunity and I always think that God has a plan for everything. The fact United were the only team in for me in January meant, for me, it has to be here.”
Acknowledging the highs and lows of his career so far, he stressed the value of perseverance: “It’s just about always believing in myself and believing that I can always get better by getting top moments on the pitch. It’s about learning from my mistakes and always giving my best.”
