PDP Confirms Umar Damagum as Substantive National Chairman at Ibadan Convention
The Peoples Democratic Party has confirmed Umar Damagum as its substantive National Chairman during the 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, also dissolving party structures in five states as 2,745 delegates vote for other key positions.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday formally ratified Umar Damagum as its substantive National Chairman during the party’s 2025 elective National Convention held in Ibadan.
The motion confirming Damagum’s elevation was moved by Hon. Tony Abineri, Chairman of the Edo State PDP and leader of the Forum of State Chairmen, on behalf of delegates. It was seconded by party chieftain Edward Marshal, in line with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution (as amended).
“I hereby move the motion for the ratification of Amb. Umar Damagum as the substantive national chairman of our great party. This action is in accordance with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution (as amended),” Abineri stated.
The declaration was met with resounding applause, reflecting broad approval among delegates.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the ratification brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the party’s national leadership following earlier factional disagreements.
The PDP also announced the dissolution of its party structures at the ward, local government, and state levels in five states: Imo, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Abia, and Rivers.
Meanwhile, 2,745 accredited delegates are currently voting for other national positions, excluding delegates from the dissolved state chapters.
