The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified security preparations ahead of its 2025 elective national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State.

To this end, the party inaugurated its Security Sub-Committee on Wednesday, charging members to ensure a credible and incident-free exercise.

At the inaugural meeting in Abuja, the Director-General of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Taraba State, Col. Agbu Kefas (Rtd), was represented by Senator (Col.) Austin Akobundu (Rtd). Also present was former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), representing the NCOC leadership.

Senator Akobundu described the committee’s role as vital to the success of the convention, noting that its members were carefully chosen for their experience and expertise in security management.

“It clearly demonstrates the effort to ensure that, despite the challenges this party has been facing, it will survive. It will stay afloat, and we’ll do a convention that we are all praying will be very successful,” he said.

Akobundu stated that the committee would work closely with security agencies to prevent disruptions and maintain effective coordination throughout the event.

“Our job is to provide not only perimeter security but to gather intelligence, working hand in hand with security agencies to ensure a hitch-free convention devoid of incursions from undesirable elements,” he explained.

He added that members with professional security backgrounds would be given specific duties, and a site visit to the Ibadan venue would soon be conducted to finalize logistics.

In his remarks, Tanimu Turaki (SAN) assured the committee of full support from the NCOC, emphasizing that security would play a decisive role in determining the success of the convention.

“The success of the convention is 85 per cent contingent on what members of this committee will do in Ibadan. Security is key, whether at the perimeters, inside the venue, or in ensuring that the process runs smoothly,” Turaki stated.

The 2025 PDP elective convention is expected to elect new national officers and shape the party’s strategic direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
