The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has suspended its strike action following the Federal Government’s intervention in its dispute with the Dangote Group.

PENGASSAN President, Festus Osifo, announced the decision at a press conference, noting that an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) resolved to halt the strike. He explained that the suspension was to allow the implementation of agreements reached during negotiations and as a show of respect for the government’s efforts in resolving the conflict.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, confirmed in a statement that the Dangote Group has agreed to unionisation. He added that affected refinery workers will be reabsorbed into other Dangote companies without loss of pay, stressing that no worker will face victimisation over their role in the dispute.

The mediation team included the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu; Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; DG DSS, Adeola Ajayi; and DG NIA, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.

PENGASSAN welcomed the resolution as an important step towards restoring industrial harmony in the oil and gas sector. However, Osifo warned that the union would resume the strike without notice if the Dangote Refinery fails to honour the agreement.
