Police Inspector Kills Colleague, Wounds Another in Rivers Shooting
A police inspector has allegedly shot two colleagues in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, killing one officer and injuring another. Police confirm the suspect’s arrest and ongoing investigation.
An Inspector of Police, Victor Okus, has allegedly shot two of his colleagues during an altercation in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, killing one officer and leaving another injured.
The incident, whose immediate cause remains unclear, involved officers attached to the 17 Police Mobile Force (PMF) who were on special duty at Intels, Onne. Okus was swiftly arrested after the shooting and is currently in police custody.
Confirming the incident, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, described the development as tragic and said it occurred on Sunday.
She disclosed that one of the officers died instantly, while the other was rushed to hospital for treatment.
“The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened to report a tragic and distressing incident that occurred on January 18, 2026, resulting in the loss of a dedicated Police Officer, Inspector Ibrahim Sani,” she said.
Iringe-Koko explained that preliminary investigations showed the shooting occurred around 1:20 pm at Next Cash and Carry Supermart, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt.
“The suspect, Inspector Okus, a colleague and fellow officer attached to 17 PMF, but on special duty at Intels, Onne, has been arrested and is currently in police custody,” she stated.
According to the police spokesperson, Inspector Sani and Inspector Daniel Dauda, both attached to 14 PMF, Yola, were on joint guard duty with military personnel when the incident occurred.
“Inspector Okus allegedly shot his colleagues on the head and neck regions. The injured officers were promptly rushed to Nopsam Hospital for medical treatment, where Inspector Sani succumbed to his injuries, while Inspector Dauda is still receiving medical treatment. The corpse has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary, Port Harcourt, for preservation and autopsy,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident.
Iringe-Koko quoted the CP as saying the suspect would first face an Orderly Room Trial before being charged to court.
“The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, CP Adepoju, has directed a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident, ensuring that the circumstances surrounding this reprehensible act are thoroughly examined,” she said.
She added that the CP urged officers to exercise professionalism in handling firearms while on duty and extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer.
“The CP further advised officers that handling of firearms while on duty is a serious responsibility and not a routine task. It is crucial to prioritise your safety and the safety of others so as to prevent potential tragedies,” she said.
