President Trump Backs JD Vance as ‘Most Likely’ 2028 GOP Nominee

Despite the constitutional prohibition on a third term, Trump has repeatedly hinted at the idea. Merchandise featuring slogans like “Trump 2028” and “Rewrite the rules” remains available on his official online store.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump indicated on Tuesday that Vice President JD Vance would be the probable Republican nominee for president in 2028.

Trump, who has previously avoided naming a preferred successor, acknowledged in February that while Vance was “very capable,” it was premature to make such declarations.

When asked Tuesday whether Vance was the natural heir to his Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, Trump told reporters:

“Well, I think most likely.”

“In all fairness, he’s the vice president,” he added.

The comments came amid speculation that Trump might attempt to circumvent constitutional term limits and run for a third term.

“It’s too early, obviously, to talk about it, but certainly he’s doing a great job.”

“And he would be probably favored at this point,” Trump said.

The former president also floated the possibility of Vance partnering with Secretary of State Marco Rubio to form a strong Republican ticket.

“I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form,” Trump remarked.

Despite the constitutional prohibition on a third term, Trump has repeatedly hinted at the idea. Merchandise featuring slogans like “Trump 2028” and “Rewrite the rules” remains available on his official online store.

However, during an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Tuesday, Trump stated he would “probably not” seek another term.

“I’d like to,” he admitted. “I’d like to run. I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had.”

Trump holds the distinction of being the only U.S. president impeached twice—first in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and again in 2021 for inciting an insurrection. He was acquitted by the Senate in both cases.

Vance, a former Marine and attorney, has played a prominent role in the administration as a key domestic policy advocate and diplomatic envoy.

The vice president has expressed openness to a 2028 presidential bid but emphasized he would consult Trump before making any decision.

Rubio, a former Florida senator, has also gained prominence, becoming the first official since Henry Kissinger to serve as both national security adviser and secretary of state.
