Procrastination: The Evil Companion -By Yusuf Abdulbasit Hozaifah
Procrastination can be a major problem in both one’s career and one’s personal life because procrastination as they say is the thief of time. When you keep putting off things, they keep piling up and getting in your way of achieving other things, then in effect, it would lead to missing opportunities, freezing work hours, feeling guilt, resentment and also stressed in the mind that you would always find that you are being overwhelmed easily because there is just so much to do at the future time.
Firstly going by what the word “procrastination” means, it would involve any act of postponing decisions or actions unnecessarily without crucial reasons. For example, someone has a week to finish a task, but they keep delaying it until right before the deadline. Now, one of the major reasons for procrastinating a task is being inactive, this would blunt the person’s edge of the urge of action.
Another thing is fear, one would surely procrastinate if there is a fear for the outcome of the tasks and then it would lead to the postponement of the work to a later date. Over time, procrastination has not only led to productivity costs but also measurably destructive effects on our mental and physical health, including poor health behaviors, general phycological distress, and low life satisfaction. Though everyone procrastinates, some, in fact, are proficient at it and the outcomes are always negative.
Possibly resulted in events for a student may include poor academic performance. Also, a high level of stress associated with procrastination may lead to poor self-compassion and as well negative feelings, self-defeating behavior, getting wrong things done, and adding to the workload of others surrounding you are also not limited to what shlepped along with procrastinating.
Having mentioned fear, it is pertinent to emphasise more that failure is one of the major causes of procrastination. Perfectionism and self-criticism are what lead to fear of failure, it’s read that about four out of every ten people avoid facing difficult tasks and in place of that deliberately look for distractions, and unfortunately, these distractions are everywhere. There would always be a higher possibility of failing when there is a significant period when you should do a job but throughout that time you procrastinated and opted to perform other unnecessary tasks.
As also being said, promptness is the soul of business. Just to say the least, there are so many people whose precious lives have been affected by procrastination. Though they have the ideas but they are careless to act on them at the proper time, they thus waited, doubted, and hesitated till the enthusiasm in that thing they should do disappear. And checking such outcome, it is not only the enthusiasm that is lost, meanwhile, the dreams, the visions, and the sense of the invention have also followed.
Most importantly, it should be learnt that one should not be least afraid of making responsibilities scrap up your mind that you would assume any responsibilities that come your way, along the line of your legitimate career and to your personal life and would be done without prior procrastination as there is no greater mistake than postponing present responsibilities thinking that there should be another better time to assume it.
Energy wasted in postponing things until another time would often do the work you had wanted to do. It is horrifying doing the work which has been before put off because you often do not remember where to start from, you may even have forgotten all the details and the processes involved in doing the work. Again, the energy relayed in bringing back all these details you were once aware of are so enormous that half of it would solve the problem in the first place.
In conclusion, intentional and habitual procrastination results in loss of ideas and enthusiasm about the things that should have been done, and nonetheless, it brings about little achievement and comes along with severe and unpleasant consequences. Procrastination is evil, and avoiding it is always the best remedy.
