Psychologically Colonized -By Akinyemi Akinola

I hope we realise the depth of the problem confronting us, when a people, and in our situation, almost a whole race is suffering from Identity crisis. It’s a recipe for disaster.

So, away from politics;

Just this morning, I was thinking how funny it is that most of us will probably have no issues with our son dressing, mimicking and pretending to be the marvel character “Thor”, but will frown at the same child if he tries to imitate ‘Sango’. I am talking from a practical experience. I have seen it happen.

The level of mental slavery is alarming. “Ours is bad, theirs is good”

What’s the difference between Thor and Sango?.

We often think we and our ways aren’t good enough,I have seen adults who pride themselves on not been able to speak the Yoruba language fluently, they say it with a little “poshness” when telling you how their “Yoruba isn’t that good”. This is common among ladies (no disrespect meant) and some of the so called media personalities and OAPs. The other day an older colleague and I ran into one of them who was said to be born and bred in Enugu, she was quick to tell my colleague who happens to know her father that “I am still struggling with my Igbo” you can imagine how shocked he was at her lie because he was sure that the medium of communication in her house while growing up was Igbo,(she is also Igbo by the way) but then, it is now more fashionable to sound like “oyinbo”. If only most of these people realise how funny and classless they sound with the fake accent, they will be ashamed of themselves.

I hope we realise the depth of the problem confronting us, when a people, and in our situation, almost a whole race is suffering from Identity crisis. It’s a recipe for disaster.

NB- Sango is the yoruba legendary son of Yemoja, the god of thunder and lightning, he had the ability to spit fire and he wields an axe. Thor on the other hand is the German mythical deity. he is also the god of thunder who also wields an hammer similar to Sango’s axe. In a nutshell, their characters are more or less the same. Of course marvel has adopted the myth of Thor and made him into a cartoon/comic/movie hero which people in my age bracket watched/read and loved while growing, our children now watch/read a more modernised and appealing version too..

Laslas, everything for this life na packaging.
