World number 204 Valentin Vacherot pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season, defeating an ailing Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-4 in the Shanghai Masters semi-final on Saturday.

The 26-year-old qualifier from Monaco ended Djokovic’s bid for a record-extending fifth Shanghai title, sealing his place in Sunday’s final against either his cousin Arthur Rinderknech or Daniil Medvedev.

Djokovic, 38, appeared visibly unwell throughout the match — vomiting courtside, hobbling between points, and requiring multiple medical treatments.

“I’m trying to pinch myself, is this real?” an emotional Vacherot said after the win. “I know not many of you wanted me to win,” he told the crowd, which had largely backed the 24-time Grand Slam champion. “To have Novak on the other side of the court was an invaluable experience for me. I have a hundred feelings right now.”

Djokovic, gracious in defeat, praised his opponent’s run.

“I told him at the net that he’s had an amazing tournament. His attitude is very good… so it’s all about him,” Djokovic said. “I wish him all the best in the finals. The better player won today.”

Vacherot’s victory makes him the lowest-ranked player to reach an ATP Masters 1000 final since the format began in 1990.

Djokovic’s physical struggles were evident. After breaking Vacherot early in the first set, he was immediately broken back, then began clutching his left leg and taking medical timeouts. At one point, he lay face down on the court as trainers treated his back.

Despite moments of resilience, Djokovic’s movement remained restricted. The 31°C heat and 62% humidity only compounded his troubles, as double faults and errors crept in late in the second set.

Vacherot held firm under pressure, serving out the match with two powerful aces to complete a stunning straight-sets victory.
