LAGOS — Princess Damarea Liao of Benin drew quiet controversy during a brief appearance in Lagos after being photographed wearing a set of spiritual jewelry, including crystal bracelets and an unmistakable evil eye pendant.

The unexpected choice of accessories, often associated with energy healing, and new-age spirituality raised eyebrows among traditionalists and royal watchers alike. The inclusion of crystals, in particular, felt unusual for a figure tied to a deeply historic monarchy, prompting speculation about the message behind her look.

As images circulated online, conversations began to swirl around whether the jewelry was simply aesthetic or a subtle personal statement — and what it might suggest about the evolving image of modern African royalty.

The now 20-year-old Princess who is Japanese and Nigerian, has been known to incorporate her cultural jewelry pieces into everyday wear, but this was far from.

Damarea left the Catholic Church in 2023, citing a ‘clash of my beliefs as a woman’ and ‘spiritual beliefs’ as her reason for leaving, later becoming non-denominational.

“We don’t do that. She no be Christian again?”, one woman said at the foundation event for education on Thursday about the Princess’ choice of fashion. While many disagreed, some supported the choice of jewelry believing it was just a fashion statement.
