Rivers LG Elections Clear Path for End of Emergency Rule – Wike
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that the completion of Rivers State’s local government elections has paved the way for the termination of the emergency rule in the state.
Wike made this declaration on Saturday in Rumepirikom, Ward 9, Unit 007, Obio/Akpo Local Government Area, after casting his vote in the elections.
Earlier, six months ago, the Supreme Court had annulled a previous local government election held by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). In March, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state due to growing political tensions between Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This led to the suspension of Fubara, his deputy, and the Rivers State Assembly, with Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retired) appointed as a sole administrator.
Speaking on the elections, Wike emphasized that the polls were conducted in full compliance with regulations, addressing concerns over potential legal issues. He stated, “So, having done this, then the coast is clear for the state of emergency to be lifted.”
He further explained, “By September 18, the state of emergency will expire. This means the state governor and the state assembly will resume their duties, and local governments will once again function with elected representatives.”
Wike also noted positive feedback from across the state, citing a strong voter turnout. He highlighted that the election was peaceful, with no reports of violence or ballot box tampering.
He added, “With this election, local governments can now receive their allocations directly. We must commend President Bola Tinubu for insisting that elections be held. Without elected officials, the councils would have remained excluded from funding.”
