Rivers PDP Unshaken by Rumours of Governor Fubara’s Possible Defection to APC
Rivers PDP says Governor Siminalayi Fubara has the right to make personal political choices amid rumours of defection to APC. Party chair Robinson Ewor stresses PDP remains focused while Assembly moves to probe ex-sole administrator Ibas.
The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed concerns over speculation that Governor Siminalayi Fubara may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party noted that the governor, like any individual, has the right to pursue political interests he considers beneficial, provided such decisions align with the overall good of Rivers people who elected him into office.
It will be recalled that during the six-month emergency rule declared on March 18 and lifted on September 18, one of the controversial clauses in the peace agreement allegedly signed by Governor Fubara in June was a supposed commitment to defect to the APC — a move many analysts saw as a strategy to secure Rivers State for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
Speaking by phone on Wednesday, Rivers PDP Chairman, Dr. Robinson Ewor, said any decision by the governor remains “personal.”
He stated:
“I am not aware of such a plan, neither has the governor informed me of his intention to leave the party.”
Fueling the speculation, Governor Fubara was recently spotted alongside the chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, accompanying him to President Tinubu’s office on Monday.
Observers also noted that in his statewide broadcast on Friday, September 18, when he resumed duties after six months of emergency rule, Fubara failed to acknowledge the role of the PDP in challenging the decision. Eleven PDP governors had taken the APC-led Federal Government to court, while several Nigerians condemned the declaration of emergency rule in Rivers as “unconstitutional.”
On the state Assembly’s threat to probe former Sole Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok-Etteh Ibas (retd) over Rivers’ finances during the six-month period, Dr. Ewor said:
“The sole administrator cannot account to the Rivers people. But he can account to the House of Assembly. Rivers people didn’t elect him as their governor. Appointment of Ibas was unconstitutional and an act of illegality. If the Assembly wants to probe him, it is their right to do so.”
On the fragile peace deal between Governor Fubara and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, the PDP chairman urged transparency:
“It would be to the best interest of Rivers people for both parties to make public the terms of the agreement.”
He called on all stakeholders to ensure the peace efforts endure for the stability and development of the state.
