Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has launched a scathing assessment of the club’s current squad, saying the team lacks the quality needed to challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Reacting to United’s recent outings against Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Rooney said he was disturbed by the team’s lack of ambition, especially at Old Trafford.

“I felt like I was watching a promoted team go to Old Trafford to try and get a point,” Rooney said on BBC’s Match of the Day. “That’s how Manchester United are playing at home, which is very concerning.”

The former captain also criticised the tactical setup, pointing to the use of five defenders and two holding midfielders in front of home fans.

“The squad’s not good enough, and it was hard to watch,” he said. “No matter what kind of squad you have, that’s not acceptable. Fans want to see flair, energy, and attacking football.”

Rooney added that although some players want to play more positively, the overall approach is holding the team back.

“They’re playing with a handbrake on,” he noted. “I just think a lot of the players are not good enough to be competing for the top four.”

Manchester United are currently sixth in the Premier League with 31 points from 20 matches and face Burnley away in their next fixture.

Opinion Nigeria had earlier reported that the club sacked manager Ruben Amorim earlier this week after 14 months in charge.
