Saudi Arabia’s Pro League is ready to financially back a move for Mohamed Salah—should the Liverpool forward indicate he is willing to leave Anfield.

The 33-year-old has been left out of Liverpool’s last two Premier League matches by manager Arne Slot, a decision that sparked debate among fans and pundits. Captain Virgil van Dijk defended the call, saying bluntly: “It’s not like you have unlimited credit.”

Salah was the subject of a £150 million offer from Ittihad Jeddah in 2023 and also engaged in discussions with the Saudi Pro League last summer regarding a potential free transfer.

He later confirmed the talks, saying: “My relations with SPL officials are very good, we talked a lot and the negotiations were serious. It was a good opportunity to me, if I hadn’t renewed with Liverpool it would have happened.”

The speculation has now returned. Sources close to the SPL say the league remains interested in reviving its pursuit due to Salah’s global appeal and commercial influence.

While Saudi clubs have slowed the aggressive spending that marked 2022—when major names like Cristiano Ronaldo arrived—the league is still open to high-profile signings that align with the country’s rising ambitions, including its bid for the 2034 World Cup.

Salah, Liverpool’s leading scorer in the Premier League era with 190 goals, has had a quieter start to the campaign, scoring just five times across all competitions. Slot has acknowledged that Salah is “not happy” about being dropped.

Van Dijk added: “He is still a fantastic player. We have to remember there’s a reason why he’s been so successful at the club and we have to respect that. He’s disappointed, but that’s absolutely normal. If you’re not disappointed when you don’t play two games in a row, then there is an issue.”
