Scholar Dedicates Master’s Thesis to Sesugh Akume

‘Many scholars dedicate their work to their parents, spouses, or even God, acknowledging those who influenced or helped them the most. I dedicated my dissertation to Sesugh Akume, not out of personal connection, but in recognition of his service to his community and Nigeria. Sesugh’s political arguments present a profound and thorough ideal of public representation, starkly contrasting the superficial efforts of many political leaders. His sophisticated views on public issues make one question whether he really grew up in Nigeria, where his contemporaries often engage in political buffoonery and chicanery. I deeply admire the consistency of his convictions and his dedication to human rights, quality governance, accountability, and local government reforms. He has never wavered in his efforts or expositions. Sesugh is a good man, one of the few in Nigeria.

‘Through the Nigerian judicial system, he has made significant strides towards the reformation and independence of the local government system, particularly in Benue State. One notable achievement compelled the previous administration to conduct local government elections, despite the compromises involved.

‘A life like Sesugh’s is worth celebrating, and I am writing to thank him for his invaluable contribution to our fledgling democracy.’
