School dropout as the major cause of rising cases of hooliganism in the ancient city of Kano -By Sani Abdullah
It is only when we take our responsibility as a parent serious things will change for better. It has been observed that children who always perpetrate this evil acts had little or no parental attention while growing up. Some parent fails to instill in them the basic tenet of their societal values and ethics.
It’s obvious that Kano state people disturbed with surge of hooliganism that make living in the city unbearable, those are the youth between the ages of 18 to 30 years who are most likely schools dropout. Youth in any society constitute an important segment of the society, they are the productive machine of any society but unfortunately in Nigeria and Kano to be specific they are horrific and pathetic at the same time, because they engage in social vices, drugs abuse, phone snatching, stealing and political thuggery. They are sometimes used by politicians to perpetrate their evils thuggish. So many factors contributed to this social vice but most commonly to everyone are; drugs abuse, negligence of parenting care, negligence of government and society in general. And this issues if not address once and for all it will overwhelm our security system in the state and the country at large. Do we continue on this routeway? I believe the answer is affirmative. A step to curbing this menace is identifying its root causes.
Let starts with negligent attitude of some parent toward their children, honestly some parent are not playing the true parental role augmenting the societal problems. Those parent don’t send their children to school, markets, and other important places where they will learn entrepreneurial skills, leaving them idling in the society while we all know that an ‘an idle mine is devil’s workshop’. This absence of full parenting care is the major factor behind all the social vices that bedeviled our society. It is only when we take our responsibility as a parent serious things will change for better. It has been observed that children who always perpetrate this evil acts had little or no parental attention while growing up. Some parent fails to instill in them the basic tenet of their societal values and ethics.
Government also shares huge part of the problem, because government should make policy on education more robust and active. The risen cases of school dropout is posing serious threat to our corporate existence as country, no nation on earth can prosper without education, destroying the educational sector is a tantamount to destruction of the society. It is obvious that, government at all level have neglected the sector for reason best known to them. The current budget of education in Nigeria is not feasible looking at the overwhelm problems that persist in the sector for decades. At the state level, it has been observed that most of the schools are in state of dilapidation that are almost collapsing therefore those schools need urgent renovation. Therefore for government to arrest the ugly situation, good and workable policies should be made in the state and the country at large. Active legislative law should be made by our lawmakers at state and federal level that will checkmate the risen cases of school dropout in state and the country at large.
On the issue of drug abuse, all hands must be on deck, religious leaders, parents, community leaders, teachers and government must work in synergy for bringing an end to this trend. The institution saddle with the responsibility to halt cases of drugs abuse should stand on their feet, work around the clock to ensure a free drugs abuse society. This can only be feasible with the intervention of government and cooperation of the society.
Lastly, youth should know that, there is no short cut to the success in life, you must work hard, work diligently, be educated and have entrepreneurial skills to excel in life but engaging in social crimes will put your future at stake ‘Forewarned is forearmed’.
