The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as the new Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC).

Also confirmed were Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa State and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe State as NPC Commissioners.

The confirmation followed the presentation and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population, chaired by Senator Victor Umeh (LP, Anambra Central), during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Presenting the report, Senator Umeh said all three nominees were thoroughly screened and found competent and suitable for their respective roles.

“The nominees appeared before the committee for screening on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. The committee did not receive any criminal complaints or petitions against them. They are adequately prepared for the responsibilities of the offices to which they have been nominated,” Umeh stated.

He explained that the committee obtained and reviewed relevant documents such as curriculum vitae, Code of Conduct clearance, police and DSS reports before proceeding with the screening, which included presentations and a question-and-answer session.

After deliberations, the Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the nominations to a voice vote — and the “ayes” prevailed, confirming the trio’s appointments.

It will be recalled that President Bola Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate in a letter dated July 31, 2025, requesting the screening and confirmation of the nominees. The letter was formally read during plenary on October 7, 2025 by Senator Akpabio.
