President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said the National Assembly will engage the executive arm of government on the recent threat by U.S. President Donald Trump to take military action against Nigeria, describing the matter as one that concerns foreign policy and diplomatic relations.

Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, Akpabio noted that the Senate had yet to deliberate on the issue formally but would do so in consultation with the Presidency to ensure a coordinated national response.

“We have not discussed the issue of President Trump yet in chambers,” Akpabio stated.
“We shall do so in combination with the executive because we believe it is a matter of foreign policy and diplomatic relations.
I have refrained from taking any motion on that yet until we know the direction of government and what government intends to do.”

The development comes days after President Trump threatened to halt U.S. aid to Nigeria and potentially launch a military intervention, following unverified allegations of genocide against Christians in the country.

Trump had said:

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria.
And may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government yesterday reaffirmed that there is no genocide against Christians in Nigeria, dismissing the claims as the work of religious extremists seeking to divide the nation.

Speaking after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the government would continue to engage international partners to ensure Nigeria’s position is properly understood.

“President Tinubu has remained calm amid the threats from U.S. President Donald Trump and is actively working to ensure the international community understands Nigeria’s efforts,” Idris said.

He explained that recent actions — including the appointment of new service chiefs — form part of the administration’s broader strategy to tackle insecurity and strengthen national unity.
