Sickle Cell Warrior and NYSC Member Seeks ₦12m for Urgent Double Hip Surgery
A 26-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Momodu Mubarak Muhammed, is appealing to Nigerians for financial assistance to undergo a life-saving double hip replacement surgery estimated to cost ₦12 million.
Mubarak, from Agbede in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, has battled Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) since childhood. In 2022, he was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of the hip — a painful bone condition that has now affected both hips, leaving him unable to walk without support.
Speaking from his hospital bed in Benin City, Mubarak narrated to Good Health Weekly how his condition worsened despite years of treatment and therapy.
“I was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in 2022. The doctors said it was already at Stage 2. I was advised to use crutches, avoid putting weight on my left hip, and continue pain medication,” he recounted.
Driven by determination, Mubarak went on to complete his studies and join the NYSC scheme in 2025, fulfilling his dream to serve the nation. However, his service year was cut short after a major health crisis forced him out of camp in Imo State and into medical care in Abuja.
“In August, I had my worst crisis ever. I was rushed to Wuse District Hospital, Abuja, and admitted for two weeks. Tests revealed the disease had advanced to Stage 4 and spread to my right hip,” he said.
The young corper, the fourth child of a widow, has been under the care of his mother, Mrs. Sefiyat Momodu, since his father’s death in 2006.
Mrs. Momodu, a member of the Ihyau-Deen Muslim Women Organization of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Uwasota Zone, said the family has spent all their savings on his treatment.
“My son has suffered so much. We’ve spent everything we have. I’m pleading with kind-hearted Nigerians, the government, and organisations to help us save Mubarak’s life,” she said tearfully.
Doctors at UBTH have recommended urgent bilateral hip replacement surgery to prevent permanent disability. The ₦12 million medical bill covers surgery, implants, post-operative care, and physiotherapy.
Mubarak remains hopeful and thankful to all who may come to his aid.
“I believe I can walk again if I get this surgery. I’m appealing to Nigerians to please help me live again,” he said.
