Introduction:

The advent of the digital age has revolutionized the way society operates, bringing immense benefits, but also introducing new challenges. One concerning consequence has been the proliferation of cybercrime, with youths increasingly involved in such activities. This article examines the concept of social control extinction, explores the rapid rise of cybercrime among young individuals, and delves into its far-reaching implications on society and the future.

  • Social Control Extinction:

Social control refers to the mechanisms, norms, and institutions that influence individuals to conform to societal rules and norms. However, the digital era has witnessed the weakening of traditional social control mechanisms due to factors such as online anonymity, virtual communities, and global interconnectedness. As a result, youths may feel less constrained by conventional boundaries, leading to a higher risk of engaging in cybercriminal activities.

First professor of Sociology who doubled as one of the founding founder of sociology Emile Durkheim opined that “Social control refers to ways in which a society tries to prevent and sanction behavior that violates norms.” Émile Durkheim believed that deviance is a normal part of every society. Whether a behavior is considered deviant depends on the circumstances under which it occurs.

* Rapid Proliferation of Cybercrime Among the Youths:

Cybercrime has rapidly expanded among the youth population due to various factors:

a) Accessibility to Technology: Today’s youths have grown up surrounded by technology, becoming proficient in using it from an early age. This easy access to computers, smartphones, and the internet facilitates their engagement in cybercrime activities.

b) Financial Motives: The allure of easy money through cyber fraud, phishing scams, and ransomware attacks tempts many young individuals, especially those facing economic hardships.

c) Peer Influence: Online communities and social media can expose youths to cybercrime opportunities and normalize such behavior through peer influence.

d) Lack of Awareness: Some young individuals may be unaware of the legal consequences and the gravity of cybercrimes, underestimating the harm they can cause.

  • Implications Among the Youths:

a) Legal Consequences: Engaging in cybercrime can lead to severe legal repercussions, resulting in criminal records and limited future opportunities.

b) Negative Impact on Education: Involvement in cybercrime may divert youths’ focus from education, impacting their academic performance and long-term prospects.

c) Erosion of Trust: The proliferation of cybercrime undermines trust in online interactions and transactions, hindering the growth of e-commerce and digital services.

d) Societal Disruption: Cybercrime can disrupt the functioning of critical infrastructure, financial systems, and even democratic processes, with potential far-reaching consequences for society.

  • Addressing the Issue:

a) Education and Awareness: Initiatives to educate youths about cyber ethics, cybersecurity, and the potential consequences of cybercrimes are essential in raising awareness.

b) Strengthening Social Controls: Reinforcing traditional social control mechanisms in the digital realm can help deter youths from engaging in cybercriminal activities.

c) Collaboration Between Stakeholders: Governments, educational institutions, law enforcement agencies, and tech companies must collaborate to combat cybercrime and provide support for at-risk youths.
