Social Media: The Rape in Our Neighbourhood -By Tifase Ope

On a social media platform, I had seen a video of a little boy and girl sneaking to have sex, like what on earth is this Oh God?! What happened to corrections and educating this children instead of shooting rotten videos?

Social media and rape culture

Very early this week, going through many statuses, I came across a particular video a friend had uploaded with a teary emojis. Okay, I took a step further because I’m not really the type that watches videos, I’d prefer saving my data for other more important stuff but this very one shocked me!!!

It was more of a celebration with music playing so loud, a little girl barely 5, twerked and rocked another little boy, say 7 at most and you really need to see the energy from them and I could read the response from the young boy.

I do not blame this little children in anyway, they are very innocent but all around them were other small children and several “aunties and uncles” with phones in their hands, snapping and shooting videos dance and in my mind, I was like see encouragement!

Behold the world of Photography and Videography! I felt the Photography was meant to bring out the beauty of nature and whatever it captures but here I see people who abuse nature with so much rottenness.

Why will you take your time to do a video filled with so much rottenness?
Yes, You do it for fun but do you make anything better doing that? NO!

A 7 year old girl in my neighbourhood was found laying on a 4 year old boy, She was trying to kiss him and the boy was there shouting “Leave me joo” until an elder came and flogged the girl. I didn’t feel so cool with the flogging so I called her and ask why she actually did what she had done, she was so shy and shameful for what she did. Then after much persuasion, she opened up and her reason was because she wanted to do what she has been watching on TV, then I had to educate her.
These present times lack corrections and disciplines, everyone minds their business and everything has to go on social media.

People would rather shoot videos of dying people in accident scenes rather than assist them and a yoruba adage says oosa bi o le Gbe mi,fi mi le bi o se bami which means if you won’t be of help, then I’d rather be left alone.

Those children you see are the tomorrow, future, and of the present and what you invest in them depends on how beautiful it looks. You don’t have to raise them to become like yourself, if you want to see a great future, then you have to raise them better than you were raised.

The Bible says Train Up a child in the way, he should go.

The impact of training does more on the future than the present. You definitely don’t wish to see worse things than the present in the future, then you have got to do more…
