Sokoto Schools Resume as Authorities Press On Despite Security Concerns
Public primary and junior secondary schools in Sokoto State resume second term on January 5, 2026, as SUBEB assures parents of monitoring, safety measures and smooth academic activities despite security challenges.
Public primary and junior secondary schools in Sokoto State are set to resume for the second term on Monday, January 5, 2026, despite ongoing security challenges and heightened fear in both urban and rural communities.
The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) announced that the first-term holiday will officially end on Sunday, January 4, with academic activities resuming the next day in all schools under its supervision.
In a statement signed by the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, the board assured parents and the public that adequate arrangements had been put in place to ensure a smooth and orderly resumption of the new term.
Tambuwal called on key stakeholders in the basic education sector—parents and guardians, traditional and religious leaders, School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs), and Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs)—to work together to ensure pupils return to school on schedule, despite prevailing security concerns.
He also instructed education secretaries and school support officers across the state to immediately begin intensive monitoring and supervision to enforce compliance with the resumption timetable and uphold educational standards.
To strengthen oversight, Tambuwal disclosed that three special monitoring and supervision teams, each led by a permanent board member, will be deployed across Sokoto’s three senatorial zones to assess school preparedness and resumption levels.
In addition, the SUBEB chairman warned contractors handling classroom construction, perimeter fencing, borehole projects, and furniture supply to speed up work and complete projects in line with their contractual obligations.
The board reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining access to basic education and protecting the academic future of children in Sokoto State, even amid ongoing security challenges.
