Solar power

When you walk around Bauchi metropolis at night, you will notice that most of the streets are lit by diesel-powered generators. Every evening, the sound of these generators fills the air, consuming thousands of liters of fuel just to keep the lights on. But in today’s world, this is no longer the best way.

The Bauchi State Government can save millions of naira by replacing these generators with solar-powered street and security lights. Solar energy is clean, safe, and far cheaper in the long run. Once installed, solar lights do not require daily fuel or frequent maintenance. The money currently spent on buying diesel every week could instead be used to fix our collapsing schools and improve the learning environment for our children.

Just yesterday, I went around the town and saw that almost every street in Bauchi metropolis depends on generators for lighting. The noise, the smoke, and the high fuel cost continue every night. But when you visit Gombe State, you will see a clear difference — every major street in Gombe is beautifully lit by solar security lights. The streets are brighter, safer, and the government spends less. If Gombe can do it, Bauchi can do it too.

Go to Nasarawa Primary School or Sale Manga Primary School in the heart of Bauchi town, and you will see how bad the situation has become. Pupils sit on bare floors because there are no benches. Some classrooms have leaking roofs and broken walls. If this is happening in schools at the state headquarters, what about schools in remote villages? The situation there can only be imagined — it is worse than words can describe.

Education is the foundation of every developed society. A community that ignores education is preparing a future of poverty and backwardness. Through education, people gain knowledge, discipline, and purpose. It helps young people think clearly, build character, and contribute meaningfully to society. A nation cannot move forward if its children are learning under broken roofs and sitting on the floor.

Let Bauchi be an example for other states — a state that values both progress and people. Solar energy is the light of the future; education is the life of the future. Together, they can make Bauchi shine again.
