Sowore’s claims on IGP Egbetokun is baseless and malicious -CSO, Afenifere youth

The group also noted that, unlike those who abuse power, IGP Egbetokun has addressed Sowore’s actions through legal means rather than resorting to intimidation. They emphasized that Sowore’s attempts to undermine the IGP are nothing more than a diversion from Nigeria’s efforts to tackle crime.

A Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Concerned Citizens for Justice and Rule of Law, has condemned what it described as baseless and malicious attacks on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, by Omoyele Sowore, the Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 general elections.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja on Friday, the CSO accused Sowore of attempting to undermine Nigeria’s security apparatus.

Spokesperson for the group, Comrade Kabir Matazu, applauded IGP Egbetokun’s efforts in ensuring national security and tackling crime across Nigeria, but stressed that Nigeria is not a “playground for anarchists” and that the rule of law will always prevail over the actions of individuals like Sowore.

Matazu praised Egbetokun for bringing professionalism and effectiveness to the Nigeria Police Force, noting that unlike others who boast about their achievements, the IGP quietly implemented strategic reforms that have significantly curbed crime.

He pointed out that under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership, there has been a marked reduction in violent crimes such as kidnappings, armed robbery, and terrorism-related incidents. Additionally, community policing initiatives have strengthened trust between the police and citizens, fostering better cooperation in intelligence gathering.

“Despite these laudable achievements, the IGP has chosen modesty over self-glorification, a rare trait that shows true leadership. It is no surprise that Sowore and his backers are displeased with Nigeria’s progress in crime-fighting,” Matazu said.

The CSO further stated that Sowore’s attacks on the IGP are part of a well-orchestrated distraction campaign aimed at diverting attention from the significant progress being made in securing the nation.

Matazu added, “Sowore’s record speaks for itself—he is a professional protest organizer, an agent of destabilization, and a mouthpiece for those who benefit from Nigeria’s insecurity. He has built his career on inciting anarchy, spreading falsehoods, and misleading the public.”

Matazu urged the IGP to remain focused on securing the country and reaffirmed the group’s support for him in his mission to maintain law and order in Nigeria. He also called on Nigerians not to be deceived by Sowore’s antics, which he claimed are motivated by personal gain rather than the welfare of the masses.

In addition, the Afenifere Youth Coalition condemned Sowore’s ongoing attacks on prominent Yoruba public officeholders, including his recent verbal assault on IGP Egbetokun. The group pointed to a self-incriminating video posted by Sowore, in which he was seen resisting and obstructing public officers, as part of his larger agenda to destabilize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

They accused Sowore of thriving on controversy and political blackmail, saying his career revolves around inciting protests, misleading the public, and portraying himself as a hero of democracy, while actually serving the interests of whoever is willing to pay him.

The Afenifere Youth Coalition also condemned Sowore’s false accusations and digital harassment, which led to 16-count cybercrime charges against him. They said that instead of addressing the charges, Sowore continued to manipulate public sentiment by playing the victim.

The group stressed that the judiciary must ensure justice is served and set a precedent for holding individuals accountable for online defamation and cyberbullying. They also criticized Sowore’s Sahara Reporters platform for spreading sensational, misleading, and politically motivated stories.

Finally, the group noted that Sowore’s inability to secure significant votes in the 2023 presidential elections demonstrated his failure as a politician, and they commended IGP Egbetokun for his patience, professionalism, and adherence to due process in handling the defamation case.
