Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has reaffirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policy reforms are producing tangible benefits for Nigeria’s development.

Speaking during the presentation of utility vehicles to traditional rulers in southern Nigeria on Sunday, Speaker Abbas described the reforms as “tough but necessary,” noting that they demand patience and collective sacrifice. He pointed to steady exchange rate stabilization, improved fiscal discipline, agricultural growth, increased state revenues, and renewed investor confidence as evidence that “the path we are on is the right one.”

The vehicle distribution—facilitated by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN)—marks the second such intervention initiated by Speaker Abbas for traditional institutions in the South, following a similar exercise in May. Past beneficiaries included first- and second-class traditional rulers across Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Edo, Delta, Ebonyi, Imo, Sokoto, Kaduna, Niger, Taraba, Nasarawa, and the FCT.

Traditional rulers who received vehicles on Sunday include the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, the Onikate of Ikate, the Paramount Ruler of Okobo Land in Akwa Ibom, Igwe Fidelis Ogbu of Enugu, Igwe Dr. Robert C. of Anambra, and Oba Arole-Agbala of Ondo.

Speaker Abbas stressed that the initiative goes beyond symbolic gestures, emphasizing the crucial roles of traditional leaders in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, religious harmony, cultural preservation, and grassroots development. “We remain convinced that the cultural and traditional pillars of Nigeria must be supported, respected, and empowered, because a stable nation begins with strong, trusted grassroots institutions,” he said.

He explained that the vehicles are essential tools to enhance the mobility and responsiveness of traditional rulers—helping them address emergencies, engage in community development, liaise with government authorities, and sustain local security and stability.

According to him, reinforcing traditional institutions is vital in Nigeria’s diverse federation, as strong and credible grassroots leadership underpins national cohesion. He added that the initiative aligns seamlessly with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes strong institutions and community-focused leadership.

Speaker Abbas also noted the National Assembly’s ongoing work toward a constitutional amendment that clearly defines and safeguards the role of traditional rulers. He commended President Tinubu for consistently consulting royal fathers, involving them in key national discussions on security and development, and recognizing their stabilizing role in critical moments.

“The reforms underway must be completed, consolidated, and carried forward beyond 2027,” Speaker Abbas said. He urged traditional rulers to use their influence and moral authority to advocate for continuity so that “the work we have started is not abandoned midway.”

He assured that the House of Representatives remains committed to championing constitutional protections that strengthen and elevate the traditional institution.
