Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Tuesday administered the oath of office to three new lawmakers who emerged victorious in the August 16, 2025 bye-elections.

The new members were among five candidates elected to fill vacant seats in the Green Chamber following the deaths of four lawmakers and the nomination of Dennis Idahosa as the running mate to Senator Monday Okpebholo in the 2024 Edo governorship election.

The House had lost Ekene Adams (Kaduna), Isa Dogonyaro (Jigawa), and Olaide Akinremi (Oyo) in 2024, as well as Oriyomi Onanuga in 2025, all of whom passed away after battling illness.

Following the vacancies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted bye-elections across the affected constituencies in August. The All Progressives Congress (APC) won four of the five seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured one.

The lawmakers sworn in on Tuesday were:

  • Omosede Igbinedion (Ovia South/Ovia West/Ovia North-East Federal Constituency, Edo State)
  • Joseph Bagudu (Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Kaduna State)
  • Mukhtar Rabiu (Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State)

However, Elegbeji Ayola (Sagamu/Ikenne/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State) and Oyekunle Sunday (Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Oyo State) — the only PDP member among the new elects — were absent during the swearing-in, with no reason provided for their absence.
