SSANU, NASU to Hold Nationwide Protest October 9 Over Unmet Demands

SSANU and NASU announce a one-day nationwide protest on October 9, citing government inaction on unpaid salaries, delayed agreement renegotiation, and unfair allowance distribution.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have announced plans to embark on a one-day nationwide protest on Thursday, October 9, in response to the Federal Government’s failure to meet their long-standing demands.

The decision, reached by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of both unions on October 6, follows the expiration of several ultimatums previously issued to the government.

In a joint circular titled “Commencement of Protest Actions” and signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, NASU General Secretary, and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU National President, the unions directed all branches to hold joint emergency congresses on Wednesday, October 8, to mobilize members ahead of Thursday’s demonstrations.

The planned activities include protest marches across campuses, press briefings, and the display of placards expressing their grievances.

According to JAC, the protest stems from the government’s failure to address critical issues such as:

  1. The alleged unfair disbursement of ₦50 billion in Earned Allowances.
  2. The delay in renegotiating the 2009 FGN–NASU/SSANU agreement.
  3. Non-payment of two months’ outstanding salaries.
  4. Unpaid arrears of 25% and 35% salary increases.
  5. Failure to remit third-party deductions for May and June 2022.

The unions recalled that after issuing a seven-day ultimatum on September 15, they granted a 14-day extension, which expired on October 6, without tangible government action.

They noted that while the Federal Ministry of Education had inaugurated a Joint Consultative Committee to review their demands, only two meetings had been held — on September 19 and October 6 — with “little progress” made.

“In light of this development,” the statement said, “the National JAC hereby directs branch leaderships in universities and inter-university centres nationwide to convene a Joint Congress on Wednesday, 8th October, 2025, to mobilize and prepare for a massive and effective ONE-DAY protest on Thursday, 9th October, 2025.”

JAC urged all NASU and SSANU members in federal and state universities to fully comply, stressing that “cooperation and strict adherence are essential to achieving success in our demands.”
