Steven Gerrard Rules Out Rangers Return Despite Talks with Club
Steven Gerrard has ruled out returning to Rangers after talks with the club, saying the timing isn’t right. The search continues following Russell Martin’s sacking.
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has ruled himself out of making a return as Rangers manager, despite holding discussions with the Scottish Premiership club, according to reports on Saturday.
The 45-year-old, who had been widely tipped as the favourite to replace sacked boss Russell Martin, decided against taking the job after what sources described as “constructive talks,” concluding that the timing was not right for a comeback to Ibrox.
Martin was dismissed last weekend — just four months into his tenure — following a poor run that saw Rangers win only one of their opening seven Premiership matches.
Gerrard previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, guiding them to an unbeaten league title in the 2020/21 season, ending Celtic’s nine-year dominance. He left the Glasgow side to join Aston Villa, before later moving to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, a role he left in January 2025.
Following Martin’s departure, Rangers’ search for a new manager continues, with Hearts boss Derek McInnes, former Rangers defender Kevin Muscat, and ex-Everton manager Sean Dyche also reportedly under consideration.
