Security operatives in Kaduna have apprehended a suspected vote buyer, Shehu Aliyu Patangi, with a staggering ₦25,963,000 in cash, just hours before the scheduled bye-elections on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

The arrest was made at about 3:30 a.m. at a well-known hotel along Turunku Road in the Kaduna metropolis by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, working in conjunction with the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to the Kaduna State Police Command, early investigations suggest the money was intended to influence voters and compromise the credibility of the electoral process.

Police spokesperson DSP Mansir Hassan confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect had confessed to the offence and had pleaded for leniency.

Quoting Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, Hassan said:

“The suspect was arrested with the said amount, believed to have been earmarked for bribing voters. He confessed to the crime and begged for mercy. We wish to reiterate that anyone found attempting to undermine the electoral process will face the full wrath of the law.”

The Commissioner also issued a stern warning against vote buying, political thuggery, violence, or any acts designed to disrupt the polls, stressing that no one would be spared, regardless of status.

“The Command will deal decisively with troublemakers. Anyone, no matter how highly placed, who engages in violence, intimidation, vote buying, or thuggery will be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement added.

The police reassured Kaduna residents of adequate security before, during, and after the bye-election, urging all eligible voters to come out and exercise their civic responsibility peacefully.
