Taliban Execute Man in Public for Double Murder in Western Afghanistan
Taliban publicly execute man convicted of killing two people in Badghis province, marking the 11th public execution since their return to power in 2021.
Taliban authorities on Thursday publicly executed a man convicted of killing two people in western Afghanistan, the country’s Supreme Court announced.
The execution took place at a sports stadium in Qala-I-Naw, the capital of Badghis province, before a large crowd of spectators, according to a statement from the court.
Witnesses told AFP that the man was shot three times by a relative of his victims in front of thousands of onlookers.
According to the court, the convict had been “sentenced to retaliatory punishment” for fatally shooting a man and a woman. The statement added that his case had been “examined very precisely and repeatedly” before the sentence was approved.
“The families of the victims were offered amnesty and peace but they refused,” the court said.
The execution marks the 11th public execution carried out in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, according to an AFP tally.
Authorities had reportedly invited residents to witness the execution, circulating official notices across the province on Wednesday.
