There is a renown saying for all parents, “train your child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. As a parent, you should be able to distinguish between “child bearing” and “child rearing”. Child bearing encompasses the processes involved in conceiving, being pregnant and being delivered of a child. Child rearing, on the other hand covers the whole processes involved in bringing up or raising up a child.

Currently, the level of conscientious parenting seems to wane at the rise of the morning sun. Many young child occupy positions in the parliament of life at a very tender age, making decisions for themselves, as they become preys to illicit imaginations. These children try to find Solace in social medias like: Facebook, Instagram, twitter, YouTube and Tik-Tok. It is therefore horrifying, alarming and even disturbing that these children still have parents, but their parents are workaholics who have little or no time for their children and wards. Although, their rich workaholic parents provide for them, cloth them, send them to the best schools in town, but do not involve in their mental growth. Same applies to the poor workaholic parents.

Moreover, a child needs his/her parent or guardian to grow mentally, physically, emotionally, and educationally. You must train them to become you and even better than you, that is, if you are a first-class mother or father – figure.

Similarly, there is no need calling a union a family; if the child is the mother and father to himself. However, it is technically clear that such a child has been automatically restricted from receiving the basic parent-child counseling. He or she bears his/her burdens alone at times and find it so hard to climb through the stairs of life.

Regrettably, social vices is prevalent in our country today and this is worrisome. It seems the country is moving toward an impending doom. Immorality never rains but it pours in our country.

Contemporaneously, two unethical happenings dispersed across the internet: The leaked sex video of a 15 years old student of the Chrisland Schools (which spans various reactions across social media platforms) during a trip to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) to participate in the World School Games between 10th to 13th of March, 2022. As a result, the Lagos State Government took bold steps by Shutting down the said school and lifted it some days after. Also, the disheartening story of a 15 years old kidnapper, who engaged in the nefarious act to be rewarded #5000.

Several unholy videos of this Chrisland student have been posted to nooks and crannies of the internet with the name of her Tik-Tok page being (Bahdgurl4k) the surprise of many – a young girl in her prime? And a major source of questions, reactions and criticisms to people.

Imperatively, all these are birthed by bad parental upbringing. Children should not be fully exposed to the internet. Many children emulate their celebrity idols; They want to walk like them, dress like them and even talk like them. Parents should know who their children converse with on social media, the Kind of movies they watch and also the kind of songs they listen to.

In conclusion, child rearing is the primary role of parents. “Discipline your child while there is still hope, but don’t set your heart on his destruction” It is better for your child to cry under your tutelage than cry in a prison. Since bad child rearing is one of the major incentives of social vices in our country today, I think that Nigeria would become an island of good fortunes if the current degree of bad parenting is depreciated tremendously.
