As the first school we attend, our families play a significant role in shaping our self-concept, self-esteem, and personality development. The way parents and family members perceive and label us can have a lasting impact on our lives.

According to George Herbert Mead, social interactions, including parental feedback, shape our sense of self and identity. Charles Cooley’s “Looking-Glass Self” theory also highlights how others’ perceived judgments influence our self-concept.

When parents label their children as “intelligent,” “smart,” “dull,” “beautiful,” or “ugly,” it can significantly affect their self-esteem and personality development. These labels can become internalized, making it challenging for children to detach from them as they mature. Negative labels, in particular, can be damaging, leading to low self-esteem and self-doubt.

The impact of parental labels can be seen in how children perceive themselves and their abilities. A child labeled “ugly” may struggle to accept compliments or appreciate their unique qualities. Similarly, a child labeled “dull” may doubt their intellectual abilities, even if they have potential.

It’s essential for parents to recognize the power of their words and labels. By focusing on positive reinforcement and appreciation, parents can help their children develop a strong sense of self-worth and confidence. Rather than comparing children to others, parents should celebrate their unique qualities and strengths.
