The Urhobo Language Must Not Die -By Isaiah Ogedegbe

Many Urhobo parents don’t communicate with their children in the Urhobo language, but in English language. Are we the only tribe that has learnt the English language well, that we should abandon our roots because of it? We should be wise like other tribes and do things right.

Today, I want to draw our attention to a story in Judges 12:1-6. As I read the words of the Bible, I begin to think about my own Urhobo tribe.

Let me ask us a few questions: If what happened then was to happen in Urhoboland, don’t you think some Urhobo children may lose their lives for failure to speak their own language? Who is to blame if not the Urhobo parents?

The Urhobo language must not die. Let us creatively promote the Urhobo language by producing Urhobo films, launching newspapers in the Urhobo language, composing and singing songs in the Urhobo language, etc.

Let us teach the Gileadites the language of the Gileadites, even as the Ephraimites teach their own the language of the Ephraimites. A word is enough for the wise.
