Tinubu Arrives in Brazil for State Visit, Set to Deepen Nigeria-Brazil Ties

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Brasília, Brazil’s capital, early Monday for a two-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Latin America’s largest economy.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the presidential jet, NAF-001 (Eagle One), touched down at Brasília International Airport around 12:30 a.m. local time (4:30 a.m. Nigerian time).

Tinubu was welcomed by Carlos Duarte, Brazil’s Secretary for Africa and the Middle East; Carlos José Moreno Garcete, Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria; and top Nigerian officials, including Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

Upon arrival, the president proceeded to his hotel, where he was received by a high-level delegation including:

  • Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas
  • Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin
  • Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State
  • Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State
  • Minister of Finance Wale Edun
  • Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar
  • Minister of Trade and Investment Dr Jumoke Oduwole
  • Minister of Information Mohammed Idris
  • Minister of Livestock Development Idi Maiha
  • Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji

The visit will include high-level engagements on Monday at the Planalto Palace, where President Tinubu will hold bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Both leaders are expected to witness the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and address a joint press conference.

Tinubu’s itinerary also features meetings with:

  • President of the Brazilian Senate
  • President of the Chamber of Deputies
  • President of the Supreme Federal Court

He will also attend the Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum, a key event that will bring together business leaders and officials to discuss mutual opportunities.

The President’s agenda will focus on boosting cooperation in several strategic sectors, including:

  • Aviation (highlighted by the signing of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) for direct flights between Nigeria and Brazil)
  • Agribusiness and livestock
  • Trade and investment
  • Security collaboration
  • Energy transition
  • Cultural exchange

Breakout sessions and sideline meetings involving Nigerian ministries and agencies are expected to support the broader objectives of the visit, which underscores Tinubu’s push to expand Nigeria’s global partnerships and economic footprint.
