Tinubu Urges Governors to Comply with Supreme Court, Release LG Allocations
President Bola Tinubu urges Nigeria’s governors to hand over local government allocations in line with the Supreme Court ruling, emphasizes funded autonomy, and highlights APC’s growth and upcoming reforms.
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday directed Nigeria’s 36 state governors to release local government allocations to their respective councils in accordance with a Supreme Court ruling. He emphasized that local government autonomy is meaningless without a funded mandate.
Speaking at the 14th APC National Caucus meeting at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, Tinubu also highlighted plans to introduce state police to tackle insecurity, assuring international partners of Nigeria’s commitment.
“You must yield and continue to promote, tolerate and be flexible, get involved in whatever is happening in your various states, up to local government level,” the President said. “To me, local government autonomy must be effective. There is no autonomy without a funded mandate—we will give them their money directly. That’s the truth. That’s compliance with the Supreme Court. Take leadership seriously.”
Tinubu also extended condolences to the Bayelsa state government over the death of its deputy governor and called for increased female representation in party structures.
Earlier, APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda praised the party’s growing national influence, citing defections, a membership registration drive, and plans for a new national secretariat in Abuja. He highlighted defections from opposition parties, including Governors Diri (Bayelsa), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), stating that the APC now holds an “overwhelming majority” in both chambers of the National Assembly.
Yilwatda also briefed caucus members on ongoing constitutional amendments led by Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, preparations for FCT local government elections on February 21, 2026, and the nationwide rollout of an electronic membership registration system, set to conclude by January 30, 2026.
“The APC remains united, resilient, and forward-looking,” Yilwatda said. “We fully support the bold reforms of Mr President, which are already yielding positive results in economic stabilization, infrastructure development, and national security.”
The caucus, which gathers top party leaders including the President, Vice President, APC governors, and members of the National Working Committee, serves as a strategic platform to align the party on political and organizational priorities.
