Trump Explains Why the U.S. Boycotted G20 Summit in South Africa
Former U.S. President Donald Trump says the U.S. skipped the G20 Summit in South Africa over alleged human-rights abuses and a diplomatic dispute, claiming Pretoria refused to follow protocol during the handover of the G20 presidency.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has defended the United States’ decision to skip the G20 Summit in South Africa, accusing the host government of serious human-rights abuses and refusing to follow diplomatic protocol.
In a statement on Friday, Trump said: “The United States did not attend the G20 in South Africa, because the South African Government refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Right Abuses endured by Afrikaners, and other descendants of Dutch, French, and German settlers.”
Trump, who has long criticised South Africa over land reform, repeated allegations of violence in the country. “To put it more bluntly, they are killing white people, and randomly allowing their farms to be taken from them,” he claimed. He further attacked U.S. media organisations, saying they refuse to report on what he called “this genocide.”
The former president also accused South Africa of violating G20 protocol by refusing to hand over the presidency to a senior U.S. Embassy representative at the summit’s closing ceremony.
“At the conclusion of the G20, South Africa refused to hand off the G20 Presidency,” Trump said. “Therefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year.”
He went on to announce that the U.S. would cut financial support to Pretoria: “South Africa has demonstrated to the World they are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere, and we are going to stop all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.”
The South African government has not yet issued a response to Trump’s comments.
